Week 2 Of Powerball Xs & Os Brings Fewer Winners, Bigger Payouts

The second drawing of the new NFL-themed draw lottery game Powerball Xs & Os was rather uneventful. And after the way the first drawing went, uneventful is a good thing.

The number of winners in Week 1 far exceeded the Multi-State Lottery Association’s expectations, leading the organization to fall back on fine print and award winners just a fraction of the money that was advertised. In the Week 2 drawing on Sunday night, the results stuck to the script, and the winning tickets are therefore worth the full amounts indicated in the game rules.

The eight winning NFL teams drawn were the Bengals, Cowboys, Jaguars, Raiders, Dolphins, Saints, Eagles, and 49ers, and nobody matched all eight to claim the jackpot. Six tickets did go seven-for-eight — three purchased in North Carolina, one in Nebraska, one in Pennsylvania, and one in Tennessee — and each of those is worth $20,000. That’s far better than the previous Sunday, when 19 tickets matched seven of the eight NFL logos and saw their payouts reduced to a mere $500 apiece.

As for the next prize tier, matching six of eight, there 268 winners in Week 2 compared to 810 in Week 1. This week’s winners will each collect $500 — quite a bit better than the $40 that tier paid the week prior.

There were also 4,480 tickets that went five of eight Sunday for $40 and 29,840 that went four of eight and turned their $5 purchase into a $7 payout.

Current Powerball and Mega Millions prizes

While the Xs & Os jackpot is worth an estimated $1 million, the standard Powerball drawing has quite a bit more money than that up top. The estimated jackpot crossed the $300 million mark over the weekend and stands at $313 million (cash value: $133.6 million) for Monday night.

In Saturday’s drawing, where the winning numbers were 18, 30, 41, 45, 68, and red Powerball 10, one customer in New York won an even $1 million for matching everything but the red Powerball. Nobody else scored more than $100,000 in the drawing.

The Powerball jackpot has now rolled over 16 times since a player in Illinois hit the massive $1.04 billion jackpot on Aug. 12 and chose the lump-sum payment of $450.5 million.

On the Mega Millions side of the draw lottery streets, the estimated jackpot sits at $261 million (cash option: $110.5 million) for Tuesday’s drawing. In the most recent drawing, on Friday night, the winning numbers were 4, 9, 24, 56, 68, and gold Mega Ball 1, and the top prize awarded was $50,000.

There have now been 15 rollovers since an $800 million jackpot hit in Florida on July 28.

Tickets for Mega Millions cost $5 and Powerball tickets cost $2. Most states offer the multiplier option for Powerball, which impacts any prize won except the jackpot, for an additional $1. Mega Millions comes with an automatic multiplier for any prize except the jackpot.

Both Powerball and Mega Millions are legal in all states except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. Tickets for both draw games are also sold in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Puerto Rico and the U.K., customers can buy tickets for Powerball, but not for Mega Millions.
