The Missouri Lottery was founded in 1985, with proceeds initially sent to the state’s General Revenue Fund. Voters approved the lottery by a 70% majority in 1984, with the first tickets sold starting in 1986. Since 1994, more than $7 billion has been generated towards educational opportunities for Missouri students.

Missouri Lottery scratchers vary from one game to another, with prices ranging from $1 to $30. Each one has its own odds of winning, which differ from game to game and even among similar prizes. How to Claim Prizes & Claim Centers

Players who win $600 or less can claim their prize at any Missouri Lottery retailer. Prizes from $600.01 to $35,000 can be claimed and picked up on the same day at Lottery offices in Kansas City, Springfield, Jefferson City, and St. Louis. Winners must bring the signed winning ticket, a completed claim form, and a government-issued photo ID. Winnings of $35,000 or more will be processed in about two weeks.

Lotto, Mega Millions, and Powerball winnings are paid as an annuity or one lump sum cash payment, which must be requested within 60 days after the prize is claimed, or the amount will be delivered in 25 annuity installments for Lotto and 30 installments for Mega Millions and Powerball.

Those claiming prizes of $600 or more must complete IRS Form W-9. The Missouri Lotto will withhold state taxes of 4% and federal withholding taxes of 24% if the prize is $5,000 or more.

The Missouri Lottery officially began operations on January 20, 1986, with ticket sales of its Lotto draw game. Powerball began in 1992, and Missouri joined Mega Millions on January 31, 2010.   1. The biggest prize won in Missouri Lottery history was a $587.5 million Powerball jackpot on November 28, 2012, split with another Arizona player. At the time, it was the second-largest jackpot in US lottery history. 
  2. A Powerball ticket worth $254 million was the richest sold in Missouri on January 26, 2007, after a player bought the winning ticket at a grocery store on Tesson Ferry Road in south St. Louis County.

  4. Tom Rea of St. Louis purchased a winning Powerball ticket on July 4, 2015, matching all five numbers and the Powerball to win the $70 million jackpot.
