A bill sponsored in 1973 by Rep. Arthur Genest of Waterville laid the foundation for the Maine State Lottery. The public voted in favor of the measure, and the state’s lottery began operations in 1974.

Once up and running, the first lottery draw game called “Play Me” sold for $0.50, and the first winner claimeda $20 prize. Lottery proceeds go to the state’s General Fund, which helps support various state programs to benefit citizens.
