How to Claim Prizes & Claim Centers

Claiming prizes from the Virginia Lottery is an easy process if users know the steps to follow. Players should never forget to sign the back of the ticket as soon as it’s confirmed to be a winner. There are several options to claim winnings depending on the amount. Prizes of $599 or less can be claimed at any authorized Virginia Lottery retailer. 

Any prize of up to $5,000 can be claimed using the Virginia Lottery app by simply tapping the  Ticket Checker, scanning the ticket barcode, and claiming the prize. Funds will be transferred directly into the player’s online wallet. Players must file an online claim for prizes over $600 and wait for approval before funds are added to their wallets. The first online claim of over $100 may require players to provide additional information before processing the claim.  

Prizes over $600 can be claimed at any Virginia Lottery customer service center. Winners must provide a valid government-issued ID and Social Security card to prove their identity and complete a claim form before processing. Draw game tickets will expire 180 days after the drawing date, and Print ‘n Play games will expire 180 days after purchase. Scratch-off ticket prizes can be claimed up to 180 days after the game ends. 

Winnings over $600 playing the Virginia Lottery will be reported to state and federal tax agencies. Prizes over $5,000 will have taxes automatically withheld at the rate of 24% for federal taxes and 4% for Virginia state taxes.
