Welcome to this week’s “Lotto Matrix,” a weekly Friday compilation of the lottery industry’s most significant, interesting, or absurd happenings.

      Jackpot.com expands to Colorado

Online lottery courier Jackpot.com has joined Jackpocket and Lotto.com by officially launching in Colorado. This marks the seventh state for the company, as Coloradans gain one more option for access to popular draw games like Mega Millions and Powerball, along with state-specific draws such as Cash 5, Pick 3, and Lucky 4 Life.

Coinciding with the Colorado Lottery’s 40th anniversary last year, Jackpot.com brings a modernized approach to lottery participation. The platform simplifies the process by purchasing tickets directly from authorized retailers and displaying a digital scan for users. Winnings under $600 are instantly deposited into users’ accounts, while larger prizes are securely delivered to ticket holders, who can claim their winnings directly through the Colorado Lottery.

      Jailtime likely for former official

Uniontown, Pennsylvania’s former treasurer, Antoinette Hodge, embezzled over $100,000 in taxpayer funds during her tenure to cover her lottery addiction. That’s the conclusion of her trial, which wrapped up earlier this month.

Elected in 2019, Hodge’s actions came under scrutiny in early 2021. Multiple taxpayers received delinquency notices despite having paid their taxes.

This anomaly prompted the Uniontown City Council to launch an investigation, leading to an audit of financial activities between 2020 and 2021. The audit revealed a significant shortfall of over $106,000 in taxpayer funds.

A grand jury investigation uncovered that Hodge had misappropriated the missing funds for personal use. Testimonies from her staff highlighted suspicious changes in office protocols under her leadership.

Hodge took over critical financial tasks, such as fraudulently submitting fake deposit slips and independently reviewing tax account details, while also dismantling established checks and balances meant to prevent such actions. These alterations effectively eliminated oversight, giving her unrestricted access to the funds.

During the grand jury’s proceedings, evidence revealed that Hodge used the stolen money to finance lavish vacations and indulge in high-stakes gambling, spending tens of thousands of dollars on lottery tickets annually. In light of this evidence, she faced multiple charges, including theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, perjury, and misapplication of entrusted property.

Hodge was recently convicted on all charges. She’ll be sentenced on November 21.

      A lucky day, indeed

Three friends from Illinois, referred to as “Tommy Lotto and Crew,” hit the jackpot with a $1.4 million Lucky Day Lotto win. The trio, who have been friends for decades, pooled their money to purchase the winning ticket.

Tommy, who bought the ticket at a gas station near Chicago’s Midway Airport, was the first to realize the monumental win. He explained that pooling money to buy lottery tickets was a tradition among their friends whenever the jackpots reached certain thresholds.

The crew initially thought Tommy was joking when he shared the news but quickly realized the truth when he read the winning numbers aloud. As a bonus for selling the winning ticket, the gas station will receive $14,000, continuing its streak of luck. According to the Illinois Lottery, it also sold a $450,000 winning ticket earlier this year.
