As the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) celebrates 10 years since its 2016 founding, it’s doing so with a new presenting partner. The tour is now officially known as the Disc Golf Pro Tour Presented by Powerball, the tour and the major national lottery brand announced Monday.
“For years, Powerball has brought the country together to dream big — and now we’re ready to play even bigger with the DGPT,” said Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO Matt Strawn in a press release. “This partnership allows Powerball to get outside, connect with DGPT’s growing fan base, and highlight how the game helps improve local communities.”
Disc golf is more colloquially known as “frolf,” as it is essentially golf played with frisbees. Competitors navigate courses and try to land the discs in baskets in as few throws as possible.
“Welcoming Powerball as the tour’s overall presenting partner represents a landmark moment for the sport,” added DGPT CEO Jeff Spring. “This multi-year partnership, currently in place for the next two seasons, is the largest in the tour’s history and will allow us to make meaningful investments in tour infrastructure and long-term development. This partnership will help to strengthen our events, expand opportunities for players, and elevate fan experience.”
The terms of the partnership also include renaming the season-long points race the Powerball DGPT World Standings, the end-of-season tournament the Powerball DGPT Playoffs, and the championship the Powerball Cup.
Powerball will also sponsor a fan contest at each tournament stop, allowing spectators a chance to toss a hole in one for a prize starting at $5,000 and building higher after any tour stop where the Powerball Ace prize isn’t claimed.
Jackpots inching their way upward
Scoring $5K for a disc golf shot is a nice prize, but it’s nothing compared to what’s at stake in both Powerball and Mega Millions this week.
Now up to eight rollovers since a near-record jackpot of $1.82 billion was claimed in Arkansas on Christmas Eve, the Powerball jackpot for Wednesday is an estimated $156 million (cash value: $70.5 million).
Monday’s drawing for an estimated $141 million top prize saw the numbers 5, 27, 45, 56, and 59 drawn along with a red Powerball of 4. A player in Florida matched the five white balls for an even $1 million before taxes.
Mega Millions boasts the top prize in the land at the moment, with Tuesday night’s jackpot sitting at an estimated $215 million (cash option: $98.3 million).
There have been 11 Mega Millions rollovers since a relatively modest $90 million win in New Jersey on Dec. 2. The most recent, last Friday, saw winning numbers of 12, 30, 36, 42, 47, and gold Mega Ball 16 and the largest prize won from that drawing was $100,000.
Tickets for Mega Millions cost $5 and Powerball tickets cost $2. Most states offer the multiplier option for Powerball, which impacts any prize won except the jackpot, for an additional $1. Mega Millions comes with an automatic multiplier for any prize except the jackpot.
Both Powerball and Mega Millions are legal in all states except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. Tickets for both draw games are also sold in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Puerto Rico, customers can buy tickets for Powerball, but not for Mega Millions.
