As anyone who’s read the short stories of Shirley Jackson knows, titling something The Lottery does not guarantee that the topic will be lottery play in the sense of the games we cover here at Lottery Geeks.
But in the case of the upcoming feature film The Lottery, a massive lottery win along the lines of what a Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot would look like is indeed the plot engine.
Deadline reported Monday that the “comedic thriller,” directed by Leo Milano, is in post-production.
Milano previously directed 2023’s The Crusades, a poorly reviewed high school comedy. The Lottery is not a high school movie, but it, too, features a young cast made up of potential rising stars in Hollywood.
As Deadline reports:
The Lottery follows five estranged childhood friends who reunite for what’s meant to be one last carefree weekend at their remote ski cabin. When they discover they’re holding a winning $300 million lottery ticket, their lives change overnight. But as a brutal blizzard traps them inside, long-buried secrets, old rivalries, and competing ambitions ignite, turning celebration into a dangerous game of greed and deception.
‘When life-changing money ignites greed’
Milano went into additional detail on the themes of the movie. “The Lottery explores how quickly friendship can unravel when life-changing money ignites greed. The cast’s extraordinary chemistry grounds the story in something instantly relatable to anyone who’s ever taken a weekend trip with friends, where drunken nostalgia, chaos, and buried tensions simmer just beneath the surface. Which raises a simple question: Would you split millions of dollars with someone you hate?”
IMDb lists a cast of eight actors at this point.
The lead roles are played by Sofia Wylie (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) and Madison Thompson (Ozark).
The rest of the cast, listed alphabetically, includes Belmont Cameli, Noa Fisher, Genevieve Hannelius, Trew Mullen, Austin North, and Esther Povitsky.
The film was written by Milano, in collaboration with Shaun Early and Jack Hussar, his co-writers on The Crusades.
There is no information yet about when The Lottery will debut or whether it will be a theatrical release or go straight to a streaming service.
The last notable movie with a plot centered around a major lottery win was 2024’s Jackpot!, an action-comedy starring Awkwafina and John Cena that streamed on Amazon Prime Video, but did not have a wide release in theaters.
