Mega Millions Jackpot At $421M For Tuesday Drawing, Powerball Back Up To $100M

Both major national draw lottery jackpots have again crossed into nine-figure territory … but with no room to spare in one case.

After there were no winners Monday night for the estimated $89 million Powerball jackpot, the estimate for Wednesday’s draw grew to an even $100 million (cash value: $47 million).

That’s small potatoes compared to where the Mega Millions jackpot stands for Tuesday’s draw: an estimated $421 million, with a cash option of $195.9 million.

This marks the 22nd time in Mega Millions history (dating back to 2002) that the grand prize has broken the $400 million barrier.

The winning Powerball numbers on Monday were 1, 7, 48, 64, and 68, with a red Powerball of 5. There were no 6-for-6 jackpot winners and no million-dollar winners who hit everything but the red ball; the largest prize awarded was $100K for four white balls, the red Powerball, and the 2x Power Play multiplier.

This brings the streak to six draws in a row without a jackpot winner, since a Florida player hit the $215 million grand prize on May 6.

The Mega Millions dry spell is considerably longer: fifteen draws without a jackpot win, since a New Jersey customer won for $1.13 billion on March 26.

The most recent draw, on Friday, with an estimated $393 million jackpot, saw the numbers 8, 17, 40, 60, and 70 pulled, along with a gold Mega Ball of 3. One player in Michigan connected on all five white balls to win an even $1 million before taxes.

Lottery Geeks estimates there were a shade over 19 million tickets purchased for Friday’s contest, up from a little under 18 million for the previous draw.

Tickets for either draw lottery cost $2 and are sold in 45 of 50 states — all but Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. Mega Millions tickets can also be purchased in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, while Powerball operates in those two jurisdictions plus Puerto Rico.
