The Powerball and Mega Millions lottery jackpots are nearing a combined $1.3 billion on the heels of Monday night’s Powerball drawing that, for the 30th time in a row, saw nobody match all six balls and claim the grand prize.
It was mostly low numbers coming in on Monday, but there was one outlier to screw things up for lottery lovers who like to play birthdays. The winning numbers were 1, 3, 7, 16, and 66, with a Powerball of 5.
The Power Play landed on a hefty 5x, significantly increasing the payout for those who played it for an extra dollar and had partial matches.
The estimated jackpot was $534 million. For the next drawing, on Wednesday, it climbs to an estimated $559 million (with a cash value of $273.3 million).
One newly minted millionaire
While there were no grand prize winners Monday, one lucky ticket sold in Virginia matched all five white balls — but missed the Powerball — to claim a million bucks.
Another 27 players hit four white balls plus the Powerball. Among those, 20 snagged $50,000, while seven took a shot on the Power Play and quintupled their prize to $250k.
The Powerball jackpot continues growing, but it’s not quite as large as the Mega Millions jackpot. The Tuesday night drawing for Mega Millions is estimated at $735 million, bringing the combined pots of America’s two biggest lottery draw games to $1.294 billion.
Mega Millions tickets cost $2, plus another $1 to play the Megaplier, and are available in all U.S. jurisdictions except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.
