Kentucky Mother And Son To Split $167.3 Million Powerball Jackpot

Well, that was quick.
The winners of Saturday night’s $167.3 million Powerball jackpot have come forward, and it’s making sons all across the country think twice about what to get Mom for Mother’s Day.
Why? Because Georgetown, Kentucky residents Linda Grizzle and her son Shannon Farthing are splitting the prize — the biggest ever won in Kentucky — after Farthing bought a single $2 Powerball ticket for him and his mom.
“It’s going to be a good Mother’s Day,” Grizzle said, according to the Kentucky Lottery. “This is going to pay off my debt.”
Farthing bought the ticket at Clark’s Pump-N-Shop on Connector Road in their hometown, and he went back to cash it a day later.
Grizzle told the Kentucky Lottery that she gave her son a call on Sunday when she noticed the numbers matched. Farthing came to her house, they couldn’t believe what they were holding, and they went back to the Pump-N-Shop to show the retailer.
“I would have never dreamed it; it hasn’t sunken in yet,” Grizzle said.
Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Mary Harville was also happy, noting this is the first time a Powerball winner has come from the state in quite some time, with the last one in December of 2010.
“Kentucky finally has a Powerball jackpot winner! And not just any Powerball jackpot prize, it is a record for Kentucky. It is $167.3 million,” Harville said. “This is so exciting for the winners because the winners have won $167.3 million but also for the retailer. They are going to get a commission for selling that big winner. And then, of course, the citizens, the people of the Commonwealth, everyone’s a winner. Because Kentucky Lottery proceeds fund college scholarships and grants for our Kentucky college students to go to college right here in Kentucky.”
Grizzle and Farthing have yet to decide whether they’re taking the lump sum, which would be $77.3 million, or opting for the 30 graduated annual payments.
The winning numbers for Saturday’s drawing were 1, 12, 14, 18, 69, and the red Powerball was 2.
The drawings continue
After Saturday’s jackpot win, Monday night’s Powerball drawing was back to the $20 million reset — and nobody won. Nor did anyone match all five white balls.
The numbers drawn for Monday were 26, 43, 51, 56, 60, and a red Powerball of 24.
Lottery Geeks estimates 5.7 million tickets were sold for Monday’s draw.
Meanwhile, the Mega Millions Tuesday jackpot is up to $70 million.
Tickets for Mega Millions cost $5, while Powerball tickets cost $2, with most states offering the multiplier option for Powerball — which impacts any prize won except the jackpot — for an additional $1. Mega Millions comes with an automatic multiplier for any prize except the jackpot.
Both Powerball and Mega Millions are legal in all states except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. Tickets for both draw games are also sold in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Puerto Rico, customers can buy tickets for Powerball, but not for Mega Millions.
